Designing of welded components and structures for structural durability requires knowledge about the influence of the following parameters on the fatigue life: Loading mode, i.e. axial, bending, load (stress) ratio, spectrum, Residual stresses due to welding and post-weld treatments, Post-weld treatments, e.g. stress relieving, TIG-dressing, shot peening, Local weld geometry. The interaction of all these parameters and their influence on the structural durability of welded joints, especially with regard to constant and variable amplitude loading (fig. 1) is the subject of this paper.
