Coastal land use in the manila bay - types and classification of coastal land use in the centre and outer sphere of influence of a metropolis

The statement made at the First Essen Symposium on Coastal Research that German geography is seriously deficient in its knowledge of the many kinds of coastal land and ocean use (Uthoff, 1983a) remains valid, although in some fields branded there as neglected a considerable body of work has meanwhile been published. There was an urgent need for analysis of individual types of use, their distribution, local conditions and space requirements, and above all a need to show marine and coastal land use patterns, to analyse the interdependence of various types of use and to reveal the conflicts involved in utilization. Several sectoral studies of individual types of coastal land and ocean use have been presented since. Regional studies on the socialization of all the types of ocean use to be found in a particular area have remained few and far between (Uthoff, 1983b: North Sea; Buchholz, 1985: North Sea; Kerbeck, 1988, 1989; Jadebusen; Schacht, 1991: Sado Estuary.
