SPATULA KNIFE FOR 25-GAUGE VITRECTOMY

Processing proliferative tissue during microincision vitrectomy surgery can be achieved in most cases using only a small-gauge vitrectomy cutter; however, scissors are still required to remove the proliferative tissue solidly attached to the retina. Although scissors are often used in conventional 20-gauge vitrectomy, crafting smaller gauge scissors functionally and structurally comparable with conventional tools is difficult. Here, we developed a spatula knife as a substitute for scissors in 25-gauge vitrectomy, a tool that we believe will be more useful than scissors in such procedures, particularly when used in the bimanual method (knife in one hand and forceps in the other).
