Residual effect of fertilizer and sowing density on growth and yield of linseed grown as relay crop.

A study was conducted at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, India, during 1998-99 to study the effect of NPK levels (40:20:20, 60:30:30 and 80:40:40 N-P2O5-K2O kg/ha) and sowing rates (100, 150 and 200% of recommended rate) of linseed (cv. Mahsuri) on rice-linseed relay cropping. Among the fertilizer levels, 80:40:40 N-P2O5-K2O kg/ha showed the highest residual effect over 60:30:30 and 40:20:20 N-P2O5K2O kg/ha by significant increase in plant height, number of branches/plant and number of capsules/plant in linseed. Increasing sowing density to 200% significantly increased plant density of linseed. However, 100% sowing density of relayed linseed was superior with respect to residual nutrient content in soil. The seed and stover yields of linseed were increased significantly due to increased NPK levels in rice as well as sowing densities of linseed. The availability of residual nutrients increased the number of capsules/plant and number of seeds/capsule.
