A field experiment was conducted on sandy loam soil in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, during the rainy (kharif) seasons of 2004 and 2005 to study the effects of moisture conservation practices (spraying of 6% kaolin at the flowering stage, dust mulching, spraying of 0.1% thiourea at the tillering stage, spraying of 0.1% thiourea at the flowering stage, spraying of 0.1% thiourea at tillering and flowering stages, removal of alternate rows at the pre-flowering stage, removal of one row after every 2 rows at the pre-flowering-stage, paired row planting at 30/60 cm with opening of dead furrow, and 60-cm row spacing with ridge and furrow) and control (no mulch) on the performance of pearl millet (cv. Pusa 605). Among the moisture conservation practices, paired row planting of pearl millet at 30/60 cm with opening of dead furrow resulted in the highest mean grain (35.2 quintal/ha) and fodder (86.3 quintal/ha) yields, net return (11 669 rupees/ha) and benefit:cost ratio (1.92).
