Effect of some herbicides on microbial population in the rhizosphere soils of rice.

A field experiment was conducted during 2004 and 2005 at Mohanpur (West Bengal, India) to determine the effect of four herbicides (pyrazosulfuron ethyl, pretilachlor, fluchloralin and oxadiazon) and hand weeding on the population of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes in the rhizosphere of summer rice. All herbicides initially suppressed soil microbial population, later it started to recover slowly. However, microbial population significantly increased in hand-weeded plot.
