Seeds of 11 wheat cultivars (KRL 19, KRL 1-4, PBW 343, HD 2189, UP 2338, PBW 509, K 9107, Kharchia 65, HUWJ 2, KRL 3-4 and KRL 35) were imbibed in continuously aerated water for 45 h before sowing in pots filled with 12 kg soil salinized by mixing the calculated amount of NaCl and until achieving a final salinity level of Ece 5.89-6 dS/m was achieved. Normal soil with salinity of Ece 1.15 dS/m was used as the control. The concentrations of Na+ and Cl- ions in leaf sap increased, while that of K+ decreased under salinity compared to the control. Among the cultivars, KRL 19, KRL 1-4, Kharchia 65, KRL 3-4 and KPL 35 restricted the uptake of Na+ and preferred K+ and thus maintained high K+/Na+ ratio, while UP 2338 and PBW 509 behaved conversely.
