While around 650 million portable batteries are sold annually in the UK, just 3% are currently collected for recycling. However, under the EU Batteries Directive, all that is set to change, as, from January 1 2010, battery manufacturers involved in the UK market become formally responsible for funding the collection, treatment and recycling of waste portable batteries.
