Colour plus clear coating systems formed from the application of a transparent topcoat over a coloured basecoat have become popular in the automotive coatings industry. In an effort to reduce atmospheric pollution there is a requirement to produce these transparent coatings without the use of volatile organic solvents. Unfortunately this creates difficulties in achieving smooth/level coatings. Powder coatings have gained popularity on wheels, axles etc, but have not been adopted for automotive topcoats as this would require expensive modifications to application lines. Powder coatings also tend to require higher temperatures than conventional topcoats and are also prone to yellowing.
