2014 – a year of change and challenges

Few in the waste management sector, from local authorities through to industry, are likely to dispute the view that 2014 has been a difficult year. Uncertainties continue to plague the world and domestic economy, local authorities remain under financial pressure as the austerity cuts continue to bite and waste companies face a struggle to maintain or increase service charges while at the same time they face falling commodity prices. Much of what councils and companies do is driven by legislation. The UK has a 50% recycling target by 2020 but even that has an element of uncertainty, especially if a vote to leave the EU was ever to materialise.
