COMMODITY MARKETS are being pulled in all directions at once. Prices for bulks, such as iron ore and coal, have jumped, with the Australian dollar iron ore price for high grade delivered into China back over $A150 per tonne. Metals have also bounced off unsustainably low levels where, with the exception of copper and tin, all other metal prices are well below the marginal cost of production. The gold price has jumped $A250 per ounce to over $A1550/oz, at which all but the most marginal local projects are viable.
