Moisture vapour transmission rates are an important consideration for a number of polymer applications, ranging from moderate values for construction materials to extremely high barriers for OLED barriers. Moisture vapour transmission rates and permeabilities were determined for twelve different oligomers and some blends in order to examine the influence of four main factors that contribute to the barrier performance: hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature; molecular weight and crosslink density; aromatic or cycloaliphatic nature; and the presence of unreactive fillers (several clay materials). Solubility parameters were calculated based on an idealised structure of the oligomers using the Hoy group contribution method.
