The sol-gel reaction is a commonly used approach to producing organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite coatings. The approach involves a series of hydrolysis and condensation reactions involving a hydrolysable multifunctional alkoxysilane (which forms the inorganic domain). The use of an appropriate coupling agent can provide chemical bonding between the organic and inorganic phases.
