Advantageous Features of Sodium Silicate As the Plasticizer for Low-Cement Refractory Castables

The plasticizing effect of an aqueous sodium silicate solution of low concentration (0.3 - 0.4 percent) on the properties of a low-cement refractory castable is studied. The merits of using sodium silicate, rather than the conventional sodium tripolyphosphate, for plasticizing sintered refractory castables are emphasized.
