Kevin Meens, Executive VP of Marketing at Brick Brewery in Waterloo, Ontario, won't get into the glass bottle vs aluminum can vs plastic bottle debate when discussing the merits of Brick's new 473 ml (16 oz) PET bottle. It was a marketing decision, says Meens. Domestic brands are losing market share to imports, and packaging is a key component to brand attractive-ness. Brick describes itself as the first Canadian brewer to package beer in a plastic beer bottle. The multi-layer design keeps the CO_2 within the container. It uses recycled plastic in its walls and is returnable to Ontario beer stores and recyclable. However, unlike glass, it is not refillable. The container will carry the same 10-cent refundable deposit as 12 oz glass bottles, says Meens.
