Maize-wheat rotation as intercrop with Bauhinia purpurea and Grewia optiva tree species in degraded lands of north-western outer Himalaya

The study was conducted under rainfed conditions during 1987-1991 to acertain the productivity of maize (var. Vijay) and wheat (var. RR-21) grown under Bauhinia purpurea and Grewia optiva. Solar radiation appeared to be the most important factor forthe growth of crops. An increase in maize and wheat yield from facing sun side was observed upto 20 and 5 per cent respectively. Planting direction of tree line did not show any significant effect on the performance of crops, however, NE-SW planting direction of tree line recorded maximum yield of maize and wheat. Further, plots nearest to the tree line recorded lower yield. Yield of maize and wheat under both tree species increased with increases in distance from tree line. As percent decrease in maizeand wheat yields over control was more under Bauhinia purpurea, hence, Bauhinia purpurea had more depressing effect than Grewia optiva.
