The fire and explosion at Indian Oil Corporation, Jaipur - a summary of events and outcomes

On 29 October 2009, a large leak of motor spirit occurred from a valve on a delivery line at the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Petroleum Oil Lubricants Terminal at Sanganer, Jaipur, in the State of Rajasthan, North West India. About one-and-a-quarter hours later, a source of ignition triggered a massive explosion and fire. The fire burned for about eleven days, causing the deaths of eleven people and major damage to plant equipment and facilities as well as to surrounding installations and the environment. The total loss cost was approximately 280 Indian crore (equivalent to about ￡42 million in early 2010 money values and exchange rates). This article summarises a detailed investigation report carried out by the independent inquiry convened by the Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG).
