MARUMAGO KOI FARM(MAGOZEN, HOSHINO KOI FARM)

Ten Years for making Parents Koi Kiyoshi Hoshino was born in Uonuma in 1932, now 81years old. He is one of the oldest koi breeders in Uonuma, who know the turning point in the Uonumatown history after the WW2. The place name 'uonuma', which can be even found in the Japanese culture and geographic book edited in the 8th century, is composed of the two words: "uo" meaning"fish" and "numa" meaning "marsh." In other words, Uonuma has been a place full of fresh-water fish from the ancient time. Today, Uonuma is very famous for the best production of tasteful rice branded as "Unonuma Koshi-hikari", but there was a severe period for rice farmers. In 1960s, the Japanese government started the new agricultural policy that they would decrease rice fields. Some rice farmers in Uonuma decided to start koi breeding using their uncropped fields.
