The US Environmental Protection Agency has given Shell an air-quality permit the company needed to begin exploratory drilling this year in Alaska's Beaufort Sea.

The permit covers air pollutants from the drill ship and support vessels Shell will use on two exploratory wells on leases 16 to 22 miles off Alaska's northern coast. Shell reports it has been seeking the permit for four years. The company has also received a similar permit covering operations in the Chukchi Sea off the state's northwestern coast.
