April’s LNG 18 conference in Perth, Australia came at a time of great flux for the evolving LNG industry. New waves of supply are combining with faltering demand growth to create a medium-term glut. Prices are under pressure from the glut and from the oil price collapse. Buyers are showing an ever greater appetite for flexibility and diversity, not least in the way that LNG is priced. In such a business environment, it is hard to see how more than one or two new projects will be able to reach final investment decision between now and 2020, perhaps paving the way for another cycle of boom and bust.
