Mertensia virginica (Virginia bluebells, bluebells, Virginia cowslip, Roanoke bells)

Virginia bluebells are the early risers of native spring flowers. It seems they can hardly wait to get up out of the ground, their deep purple, lettuce-like leaves poking up while most of their garden companions are still slumbering. The charming flowers have a bloom pattern similar to that of pul-monarias, starting as soft pink buds that open to reveal clusters of violet-blue, trumpet-shaped flowers; an occasional white- or pink-flowered rebel may also appear. Buds and open flowers appear on the same plant, creating a mosaic of pinks and purples that later morphs into a sea of sky blue.
