I recently attended the opening ceremonies for an expansion of the Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML), the marine field station for the University of California (Davis). This station conducts considerable basic and applied aquatic research, including oyster genetics, shellfish diseases and restoration of an endangered salmon stock on the Sacramento River. What really interested me was to discover that one of the first and largest aquaculture projects conducted during the early years of the BML was research into American lobster culture. Dr Cadet Hand, the first director of BML, took a few minutes from his research to discuss the early years of the project.
