Cacti in lakes regional park, Florida

A new dimension in gardening was introduced in Fort Myers, Florida, in 1995, with the establishment of a Cacti and Succulent Garden in a County Park. We are talking about the subtropics, not a place where you would expect to see Cactus and Succulentplants from many parts of the world. You ask how did this come about! It was an interesting journey beginning in 1970 with a visit to the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden, the Arizona-Sonota Desert Museum, Tucson, and other parts of Arizona. I developed adeep interest in cacti begining with a small collection of columnar cactus, Cereus peruvianus, Opuntia (Nopalea) dejector, then added succulent plants in my home garden. The garden filled up quickly and I began looking for additional space.
