Effect of barrier crops and spacing on the incidence of mosaic disease and yield of French bean.

Field experiments were conducted for 2 years (1991-92) to study the effect of barrier crops (maize, sorghum, okras, sunflowers or Amaranthus caudatus) and different spacings on the virus incidence and green pod yield of Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Jawala(a cultivar highly susceptible to bean common mosaic virus). Of the barrier crops, maize was the most effective as it reduced mosaic virus incidence by about 46% compared with controls, with a corresponding increase in yield of about 25%. Among the P. vulgaris planting densities, the lowest and highest virus incidences were recorded at spacings of 20 X 10 and 45 X 30 cm, respectively. However, the greatest green pod yield (77.06 q/ha, in 1992) was obtained at a spacing of 30 X 10 cm.
