Seeds of 10 cultivars were soaked in 0, 4, 8 and 12% sodium bicarbonate solutions for 3 h at 25degC, then dried at 65degC for 3 h, and finally milled for 8 min at a roller speed of 400 r.p.m. Treatments significantly affected milling percentage, although cultivars responded differently to alkali treatment in this respect. Milling percentage ranged from 60.9% in T49 with 0% bicarbonate treatment to 84.8% in PK472 treated with 8% bicarbonate. Undehusked seed percentage decreased with increase in alkali concentration in all cultivars, although the percentage varied with cultivar. PK472, Alankar and PK564 showed complete dehusking at 8% alkali concentration. PK429, Kalitur, Alankar, PK564 and Ankur had the lowest milling losses at 4% alkali concentration,while in Shilajeet, PK408 and Bragg losses were least at 0%. The wide range of values obtained indicated that optimum alkali treatment for optimum milling quality depended on cultivar.
