Genetic variation for seed crushing hardness, protein content and protein yield/plant, and their association with other seed yield traits were studied in 30 genotypes and 40 genotypes during kharif 1989 and kharif 1990, respectively. Genetic variability was significant for all 3 traits. The phenotypic coefficient of variation, genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance were greater in 1990 due to the inclusion of hybrids derived from an indigenous genotype X exotic genotype cross. Seed crushing hardness and protein yield/plant had positive associations with seed yield/plant, whereas protein content did not have an association with seed yield/plant. Therefore, all these traits can be improved simultaneously and combined inone genotype.
