Meeting report: 17th annual meeting of the American Society for Virology

The American Society for Virology (ASV) held its 17th annual meeting from Saturday July 11 through Wednesday July 15, 1998 at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The ASV is a large and extremely diverse group of scientists with interests in medical, veterinary, and plant virology and meeting attendance exceeded 1300 people. Meetings, which are held mid-summer, are always held on a college campus to keep meeting costs down, offering dormitory housing and cafeteria meal plans in addition to hotel accommodations. The meeting was attended by many graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, as well as senior scientists. The format of the meeting included a keynote address, four comprehensive morning symposia, eight state-of-the-art lectures, concurrent workshop sessions each afternoon and evening and 221 poster presentations. Communal dining opportunities fostered casual interactions with other participants in the cafeteria, during scheduled breaks and at the Wednesday night banquet.
