Diagnosis of a Case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a Cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis) Monkey Colony by Polymerase Chain Reaction and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay

An adult female cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) of feral origin had been singly housed at SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Research and Development, King of Prussia, Pa., for 4.5 years. During that time it was maintained on a diet of commercial monkey chow (Chow #5038; Ralston Purina, St. Louis, Mo.) fed twice daily along with supplemental fruits or vegetables. Tap water was provided ad libitum. The monkey had completed an uneventful quarantine at the nonhuman primate importer and at thisfacility.
