Making sense of it all

Interpreting the details of a scientific study can be difficult for reporters - particularly if the area of study is not something in which we have a lot of expertise. In this staff writer's humble opinion a good story comes from good research, and - if in doubt — asking questions. Science is a complex subject: with so many technical terms and techniques, it can be impossible for a journalist - even one with a scientific background - to fully comprehend every word of a scientific study. Relaying this to the general public in terms they will then understand can be hard, but making something up, as the University of Leicester suggested of the Daily Mail in a recent news blog piece, is a whole different story
