摘要

Accumulating evidence and common experience show that sleep disorders are not uncommon but have substantial effects on health and quality of life. Yet, sleep medicine is among theyoungest of medical specialties, and several studies highlight the deficits in knowledge about sleep disorders among medical practitioners: only 0-16% physicians take a sleep history during preventive care or health promotion visits, even among patients who take hypnotics or who have risk factors for sleep apnoea. The general lack of education of practitioners has been partly blamed on the lack of a suitable curriculum. These authors have tried to present a brief text that introduces "neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, pulmonologists, and internists, as well as health care professionals" to the basics with regard to sleep disorders, how to perform a sleep history and examination, and to familiarise them with various sleep tests.
