Ten years ago if a bride ordered hydrangea blooms for her bouquet I suspect her beloved might have bolted, sensing that soon she'd also be collecting souvenir teaspoons and decorating their love nest with lace doilies. In the 1990s, hydrangeas were the antithesis of floral fashion, as passion-killing as cotton knickers and about as chic as Coronation Street. Despite - or perhaps because of — the fact that most of us have at least one hydrangea flourishing in a shady corner of our gardens, these shaggy-headed summer-flowering shrubs were flora non grata as far as florists and commercial cut flower growers were concerned.
