摘要

Aworn woolshed with faded, chipped red paint sits in a Marlborough vineyard, a long working life etched in its bones. Chutes jut from a corrugated iron wall, wool peeks from cracks in creaking wooden steps and it seems a sheep might appear at any moment. This sense of extended use was exactly what Ben and Deirdre Cowley wanted to preserve when they converted the 1957 woolshed into their home, after leaving the film industry in 2001 to live and work on Ben's family's Auntsfield Estate vineyard. "Rather than tearing things down, it's about preserving what's here, because you can't rebuild history," says Ben. "History can only ever be lost and it's lost all the time, whether you're cutting down trees or pulling down old buildings rather than restoringthem."
