Person-centred care in intensive care: A myth or reality?

Recent years have seen a number of key government policies placing the patient at the centre of care (The Scottish Government, 2009; DoH, 2012). In Scotland, the Health Care Quality strategy is built upon previous policy to emphasize three quality ambitions of safe, effective, person-centred care and to do so in a way that is measurable and meaningful to all (The Scottish Government, 2009). While this driver is specifically about health care in Scotland, the Department of Health in England is also pursuing such aims and the recent Health and Social Care Act 2012 refers to the patient being at the heart of the delivery of health care.
