All good gardens involve a lot of donkey work. Not many provide the actual donkey. But in Greenhaugh, a semi-formal and wholly romantic garden on the outskirts of Palmerston North, belonging to Lynne and Les Atkins, Jacob the donkey overlooks proceedings with film star eyelashes and an air of innocent benevolence. He used to share his paddock with a flock of black-faced sheep but unfortunately, Lynne explains, he would chase them around the paddock and try to pick them up in his mouth. So now Jacob has his paddock to himself, while still receiving social calls from his human family, and the sheep graze safely a field or two away.
