One can almost hear the sigh of relief from the interior designers. A shift has taken place in the design world and it bodes well for those weary of the stark, minimalist look. The new bias in living and dining furniture and design is towards individuality. In a lush cocktail, sumptuous fabrics are mixed up with furniture in light-coloured wood, metal and glass; weathered pieces sit comfortably beside more contemporary items. In style terms we seem finally to be growing up. "I think we are getting braver with the way we decorate our houses," says Meredith Lee, owner of European Antiques & Furnishings, which specialises in antique furniture from France. "People are mixing the old with the new. They want a more interesting, individual look."
