HAPPIER ENDINGS: Jenny Knight speaks to nurses at a children's hospice that has made creating a dialogue with the patient and family its foremost priority

A nurse-led children's hospice in Wales is acting as a model of care for other services. Nurse-led Ty Hafan Children's Hospice tries to put patients and their families firmly in control of end of life care. Since it opened in the Vale of Glamorgan in 1999, it has pioneered an approach that has been adopted by a number of NHS bodies in Wales. Director of care Jayne Saunders qualified as a children's nurse in 1982 and worked on children's wardsfor much of her , career. She subsequently studied palliative care and worked for a charity before joining Ty Hafan as clinical team leader. She says: There is a rewarding aspect to being involved in a child's life and death.
