Unusual Origin for the Right Coronary Artery: One Center's Observations on Diagnosis and Treatment

Anamolous origins of coronary arteries occur rarely, but are common enough that all coronary angiographers confront them and need to be able to recognize their various configurations. Magnetic resonance imaging and multi-slice computed tomography [1] also visualizes these vessels and may be complimentary to invasive approaches. Recognizing the anatomy is only part of the battle and deciding on what treatment, if any, is the most important ultimate outcome. Unfortunately, as with any problem with a low prevalence rate, randomized clinical trials are difficult to perform and follow up for differentiating, hard-outcomes may require years making such trials unrealistic.
