NEW DYNAMICAL SU(3) SYMMETRY IN DEFORMED NUCLEI

We found a classification scheme for the states of superdeformed shells which is based upon a new realization of the group SU(3). This is achieved by expressing the generators of SU(3) in terms of boson operators. In contrast to Elliott's SU(3) case, this new SU(3) scheme has the dual nature of SU(3) x SU(3) and results in a degeneracy of a positive and negative parity levels in a given shell. We extend the new SU(3) scheme to the case of hyperdeformation in the triplicate SU(3) and the highly deformed shell in the six-fold SU(3). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V. [References: 12]
