The pion mass shift in the nuclear medium mas deduced to be +20 MeV from the recently observed deeply bound 1s and 2p states of pi(-) in Pb-207, where the observed pi(-) binding energies are most sensitive to the local s-wave part of the pion optical potential. which is related to the pion mass shift.
