In recent years, new airline companies have emerged as a result of deregulation and demand in the industry. On the other hand, alliances between airlines have enhanced aircraft operating efficiency and consumer convenience. An important trend resulting from the more widespread use of aircraft transportation and the drive to improve operating efficiency is developing aircraft with greater long-range capability. Hence engines with better fuel efficiency and higher reliability are being developed. In the development of engines, improvement of the main shaft rolling bearing has been the key to overcoming various hurdles. Some important considerations for recent aircraft bearings include the increased speed of the main shaft, the need for higher load capacity and longer life and the dependable performance of bearing at extreme conditions. Day by day and application by application, requirements from engine makers become increasingly exacting and difficult for bearing manufacturers to meet. This report introduces research and development aimed at ensuring higher performance and reliability of bearing. The topics include a new carbonitrided bearing steel, SHX; a newly developed plasma nitriding surface treatment and effect of ball unbalance in high-speed bearings.
