China’s multitrack approach to developing third-generation reac- tor technology has been quietly brewing for some time, but it was- n’t until the aftermath of Fukushima and a new emphasis on safe- ty that the new designs really came into their own. Yet, given that a new government-led program aimed at improving reactor safety won’t be fully completed until sometime in 2015, claims that these new reactors will be ready for construction as early as next year appear questionable. Either that, or the designs may not truly qualify as Gen-III, despite their much vaunted new safety features.
