Anisa Gress meets Robert Hillier, this year's recipient of the Nurseryman & Garden Centre Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by Scotts UK. It was in 1967 when Robert Hillier, joined The family business of Hillier Nurseries which had been set up in1864 by his great-grandfather Edwin Hillier. Today the nursery today spans some 500 acres and employs around 450 staff. In the company's more recent history the emphasis on production has shifted away from vast numbers of varieties to a more concentratedrange of plants in larger batch numbers. Large quantities of herbaceous perennials have been added to the traditional range of woody plants while other more exotic lines like palms and Mediterranean subjects have played an increasingly important role inthe wholesale supply of plants for the retail sector.
