Command post protocol - Large and complex operations are best handled from an isolated location

First-arriving company officers will be in command but will generally work inside a building during an offensive fire attack. However, the first-arriving officer will normally handle fires that are obviously defensive operations from the beginning by establishing a stationary command post and assigning other first-in companies. Once a chief officer is on the scene and assumes the role of the incident commander (IC), a formal command post must be established. A well-structured fire command post should be established in a known location that is easily accessible. Departments often use flags or other highly visible indicators showing the site of the command post. The command post should be outside the hot zone where personal protective clothing is not required. Further, it should be in a location that does not interfere with the movement and positioning of apparatus.
