The PV Problem-As fire service concern grows, states consider laws to improve firefighter safety around PV arrays

ON SEPTEMBER I, 2013, a major fire occurred in a 366,000-square-foot (34,003-square-meter) Dietz & Watson cold-storage food warehouse in Delanco, New Jersey. When the first fire units arrived, they reported a fire on the roof of the building. When firefighters viewed the roof via aerial ladders, they discovered that the entire roof surface was covered with photovoltaic (PV) panels-more than 7,000 of them-that were being used to generate electrical power for the building as well as to sell back to the public utility.
