Tertiary rocks in the German sector of the Alpine orogen comprise mainly Paleogene sediments. In the main part of the Helvetic thrust unit the Paleogene sequence starts with Paleocene fineclastic sediments. Up into the Middle Eocene follow iron rich limestones and sandstones. Into the Upper Eocene extending pelagic marls usually complete the Paleogene stratigraphic sections of the Helvetic unit. The sediments of the Ultrahelvetic thrust sheets reach up into the Middle Eocene and are built by pelagic marlstones with coarse grained resediments. The Feuerstatt Flysch and its equivalents comprise also sediments up to the Middle Eocene. They consist mainly of deep-sea turbidites and coarse grained debris flow deposits. In the Rhenodanubian Flysch up to now only one locality with proven Paleogene rocks is known. In the Northern Calcareous Alps deep-sea marlstones and sandstones of the upper Gosau Subgroup extend into the Paleocene. After a stratigraphic gap pelagic marlstones coexist with shallow water clastics and reef to reef talus limestones during the younger Eocene. The Inneralpine Molasse mostly contains Upper Eocene to Oligocene marlstones, sandstones and conglomerates.
