Investigations of hydrogen uptake in ball-milled TiMgNi

The hydrogen uptake characteristics of a mechanically milled Ti-Mg-Ni sample processed in accord with that of Lomness et al. Hydrogen uptake characteristics of mechanically alloyed mixtures of Ti-Mg-Ni. Int J Hydrogen Energy 2002; 27: 915-20 has been shown to rapidly absorb 2.5 wt of hydrogen at 296 K. This is significantly less than the 11 wt presented by Lomness et al. but occurs at a lower temperature. X-ray diffraction shows that our ball-milled sample comprises low crystallinity elemental Ti, Mg and Ni which converts to Ti_2Ni, Ti and Mg during temperature cycling. Examination of the hydrided sample shows the presence of Ti_2NiH_x (x > 0.5), TiH_y (0.7 < y < 2) and MgH_2. Unidentified minor phases are also present.
