Recent conveit: Jana Dobson used to 'absolutely hate gardening' but now she's making up for lost time in her colourful and creative Bay of Plenty garden

Fana Dobson is proof that green thumbs aren't necessarily genetic: with a little friendly encouragement, even the most avowed anti-gardener can soon be converted into a keen plantaholic. "I used to hate gardening," Jana admits. "I didn't enjoy it, I didn't want to do it and I really couldn't understand the attraction that others felt for it." But that all changed the day her friend Helen Hickson, from specialist old-fashioned rose grower Clonmell Nu rsery, gave Jana h er first rose bus h. She felt obliged to put it in the ground -and when it thrived, so did her interest in roses. "I've always been a bit of a collector," she confesses, "and 1 just fell in love with roses."
