ATTITUDINAL STUDY OF LAND USERS ON THE HERETAUNGA PLAINS, HAWKE'S BAY

Understanding land users perceptions of sustainability will enable agencies to more effectively meet the needs of the environment and the community. The Hawke's Bay Regional Council identified the Heretaunga Plains as a priority area in the region andcommissioned a preliminary study with land users in this area. The objectives of the preliminary study were to: determine the sustainability objectives land users consider are important to ensure the long term welfare of the industry (physical, social and economic issues), determine the land management practices that could be implemented to deal with the land management issues identified, determine how feasible and effective these practices are likely to be, and determine the role of the Hawke's Bay Regional Council in developing sustainable land management practices on the plains.
