A CUT ALOVE: The walkers have managed to establish their colourful tauranga garden almost entirely from cuttings and snippets
If Clare and Peter Walker's memories serve them right, the most expensive plant they ever bought while creating their garden cost about $16. That copper beech is still a favourite. Let it be noted that Fernside, their 4800sqm site (half a hectare) onthe outskirts of Tauranga city, is not exactly sparsely planted, and its specimen trees are far from puny. The fact that Clare and Peter have spent so little money establishing their garden - usually $10 or less for a single plant, in fact - is particularly impressive given that their property feels full. It's abundantly planted and features a mix of formal gardens and park-like grounds with towering trees. What they have invested is a lot of time and care - the bulk of their garden is grown from cuttings, seedlings or divided plants.
