Spurred by the government's open policy on foreign invest-merit, Vietnam's export furniture industry is blossoming, thanks to a winning combination of quality, service and price. But despite impressive growth, the country's manufacturing industry still faces many challenges. In a country where ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture - mainly garden furniture - dominates, the wood processing industry is widely distributed. There are something like 1200 enterprises nationwide (excluding local carpentry shopsproducing local construction wood), with a total processing capacity of two million m~3/year and an estimated operating rate in 2002 of 60%. The Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development (MARD) estimates that 300 of these are involved in furniture exports.
